Windows 10 Start search returns blank/empty page

Windows 10, as any other operating system, sometimes has minor or important issues while it’s being used. Even if Windows 10 is pretty stable in this moment, it still has some minor bugs, in this article we will describe one of these bugs.

Most of the times these bugs are caused by users, installing some software or installing updates (which, ironically, are meant to fix bugs but cause other issues).

Recently I encountered a new issue: while using the search function from Start in Windows 10, the result was a blank, empty, page. I managed to fix this issue by re-installing Cortana. This problem doesn’t occur on all the user accounts created on our OS, only on one. There are three steps we need to follow in order to fix the Start search problem:

  1. Rebuild search index. To do this we need to execute run (shortkey Start + R), type control and press Enter. The control panel window will be opened, in the search bar we type Search and from the results we select Indexing Options followed by selecting Advanced. Now, in the new window we select Rebuild. Press Rebuild and wait for the search indexes to be rebuilt. If this first step will not fix our Start seach issue, we will proceed to the next step.
  2. Troubleshoot indexing. Execute run again (shortkey Start + R), type control and press Enter. Search again for Indexing Options – select it and select Troubleshoot search and indexing. Check all boxes and press Next. If this issue will be detected by Windows, it will be fixed. Otherwise, it will not work.
  3. Reinstall Cortana. Start Search option in Windows 10 is supported by Cortana. A potential solution to our problem can be reinstalling Cortana. To do this, we need to execute run, type Powershell + Enter key. A blue command line window will be opened where we need to type the following command followed by the Enter key:

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

After this command is executed, Cortana should reinstall.
Also, in other cases, the problem may be fixed automatically after a few weeks, as we discussed with some Windows 10 users this is what happened in their cases. Not sure if a Windows update solved the issue or if it was just a temporary problem.

These are the most common solutions we can apply to fix the Start Search bug which returns a blank page, a lot of internal or external issues can cause these bugs. If you have any problem with Windows 10 (or if you don’t manage to fix this issue), don’t hesitate leaving a comment.
